Product design to unify three ski resorts in a single app, focusing on branding, navigation, and real slope usage conditions.

Introduction

Grandvalira Resorts is the group that brings together the main ski resorts in Andorra: Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalís, and Pal Arinsal. With the goal of offering a unified digital experience, the group needed a mobile application that would allow users to enjoy the services of any of the three resorts… without losing their identity. The app had to be intuitive, functional, and versatile enough to maintain each destination’s personality without sacrificing coherence or usability.

Beyond the functional objective, the app redesign aimed to become a bridge between technology and the mountain experience. It wasn’t just about providing useful information or logging activities, but about accompanying the user throughout their entire day at the resort—from planning to the final runs. The app had to feel like a natural extension of their visit: helpful, lightweight, and tailored to adapt to their rhythm and needs, even under challenging conditions like cold weather, glove use, or low connectivity in certain areas.

The challenge: Building one app for three distinct resorts without losing their identity.

The biggest challenge was orchestrating a harmonious coexistence of three brands with independent visual and operational systems within the same app. This required offering distinct experiences depending on the chosen resort, but with a shared architecture and recognizable navigation flow. From the first use, the app needed to adapt to the user's preferred resort, allowing them to switch seamlessly via a contextual menu without having to repeat steps or reconfigure their experience.

One app, three resorts. One destination, multiple experiences.

Process

After the research phase, an architecture was designed to enable resort personalization from onboarding, offering users the ability to set their favorite resort. This approach not only simplified future access but also allowed visuals, content, and functionalities to be adapted based on the selected environment. The key functionalities included:

Activity tracking: Real-time recording of ski runs with stored activities and personal metrics.

Friends on the slopes: Option to add friends, view their location on the map, and coordinate meetups throughout the day.

Activity history: Viewing and analyzing previous runs, with detailed performance data, covered trails, and dates.

Challenges and rewards: Accumulation of kilometers and unlockable achievements linked to prizes and promotions.

Integrated purchases: From ski passes to restaurant bookings or eSIM purchases—all from one place.

Activity logging and route analysis. A real-time tracking feature was designed to allow users to automatically record their runs. Based on this information, activities were generated with detailed metrics and a route map. This view made it easy for users to review their performance and better understand their day on the slopes.

Challenges and gamification universe. To encourage continuous app usage and add a playful layer, a system of daily and seasonal challenges was designed. Each challenge offered specific goals, kilometer accumulation, and general rankings to foster participation. The interface allowed users to clearly and easily track their progress and compare it with other skiers.

Conclusions and Learnings

One of the biggest takeaways from this project was the importance of considering extreme usage contexts from the very beginning. The app had to be navigable even on snow, with gloved hands, reduced visibility, and users needing immediacy. This led us to prioritize a clear touch interface, large buttons, well-defined contrasts, and a visual hierarchy that facilitated quick action.

Additionally, working with three brands under a single digital umbrella reinforced the importance of modularity in product design: thinking of each component as adaptable, scalable, and replicable across resorts without losing identity or functionality. The result: a robust, intuitive app ready to accompany skiers from their first run to their final après-ski toast at the resort.

Making of

The project’s design was developed in Figma, where a variable system was structured to adapt to the specific visual and content attributes of each resort (Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalís, and Pal Arinsal) without compromising the app's shared coherence or functionality. This made it easy to scale the design and maintain a consistent experience in terms of navigation and structure, while respecting each brand's identity.

The navigation flows were built with a modular approach, divided by key functionalities (tracking, challenges, friends, etc.), which helped both the development teams and the client to clearly understand the system. This compartmentalization was essential for maintaining clarity throughout the process and ensuring a smooth and efficient implementation.
